Tired of having to visit the coffeeshop every time? Or just curious what it’s like to grow your own cannabis? Then you’re in the right place.
In this article we explain how – in ten clear steps and with a bit of patience – you can grow your own cannabis plants.
The first step is deciding whether you want to grow indoors or outdoors. Outdoors, the growing season in the northern hemisphere roughly runs from February/March until October. Autoflowers are best grown from April through September.
Indoor growing gives you full control over light, temperature and humidity, but it does require more equipment and investment.
Cannabis plants need a lot of light. Outdoors, sunlight is sufficient (at least 8 hours per day). Indoors, you’ll need grow lights.
Good soil is crucial. Pay attention to nutrients, drainage, structure and a pH level between 5.8 and 6.8. Loamy soil is often the best choice.
Cannabis needs nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, supplemented with calcium and magnesium. Good nutrients ensure strong growth and healthy buds.
Germination can be done without light, for example in water, cotton pads or a coffee filter. Once a root of 0.5–1.5 cm appears, the seed can be planted.
The plant mainly grows leaves and stems during this stage. Make sure it gets enough light, water and nutrients. Repot in time so the roots can develop properly.
Buds start to develop. Indoors, a 12/12 light schedule is usually used. Pay extra attention to temperature and humidity.
Harvest when about 60% of the white hairs have turned dark. Cut the plant at the stem.
Let the buds dry for 7–14 days. Cure them in glass jars with a humidity pack for the best flavor and potency.
